Although the practice may seem modern, dentistry has been around for centuries. While general and restorative treatments have certainly improved since then, understanding the history of dentistry can help you appreciate modern medical practice and how far it has come. By the 1700s, dentistry had become a more defined profession. In 1723, Pierre Fauchard, a French surgeon recognized as the father of modern dentistry, published his influential book, The Surgeon Dentist, a Treatise on Teeth, which for the first time defined a comprehensive system for caring for and treating teeth.
In addition, Fauchard first introduced the idea of dental fillings and the use of dental prostheses, and identified that sugar acids caused tooth decay. A thorough medical and dental history is important in determining any possible general health problems, fitness for anesthesia, and possible anesthetic or surgical morbidities.
